How to fit a threaded brass valve with PTFE tape

Short answer: Threaded brass valves such as our CP brass control valves are fitted with a standard spanner and PTFE tape on the threads. CPVC union ball valves are different: they are joined with CPVC solvent cement.

What you need

  • The valve in the right size (15, 20 or 25 mm for CP control valves)
  • PTFE tape
  • A standard spanner

Steps

  1. Check that the valve size and thread match your pipe fitting before you start. Ask for the thread type (BSP or NPT) when you order.
  2. Wrap PTFE tape on the threads.
  3. Screw the valve on by hand, then tighten with the spanner.
  4. Turn the quarter-turn handle to check it moves smoothly, then open the water and look for leaks.

Fitting a CPVC union ball valve instead?

Join the union ends to the CPVC pipe with CPVC solvent cement, and align the valve with the pipe before tightening the union. The union lets you remove the valve later for maintenance. See our guide on choosing a CPVC union ball valve.
